Growing Stories, Growing Lives

Based in a quiet cottage in central Cambridge, Tania Gower-Bullick at Cambridge Counselling offers a retreat where life and relationship stories can unfold with manaakitanga, with care and respect. Here, there is an understanding that lives and relationships are rich and always evolving.

Specialising in Narrative Therapy, Tania provides an approach where each person is recognised as the expert of their own life. This therapeutic journey focuses on exploring the stories that shape experiences and discovering new perspectives and possibilities.

Whether you're seeking to understand relationship dynamics or navigating life's transitions, Cambridge Counselling provides the space, gentle conversation, and skilled guidance to identify the many threads of your experiences. Together with Tania, these threads can be woven into narratives that better reflect your values, hopes, and intentions.

Approach

Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy is a counselling approach that views people as distinct from their problems and recognises that identity extends far beyond current challenges. A core principle is that problems are separate from the person as captured in the quote "The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem".

Through this process, counsellors work collaboratively with the people who consult them to externalise difficulties, uncover unique outcomes, and have individuals story their lives in ways that honour their tino rangatiratanga, their self-determination and ability to be the primary authors of their own stories and lives.

By creating distance from problem-saturated stories, individuals can discover alternative perspectives, reconnect with personal values and commitments while developing richer, more nuanced understandings of their lived experiences. This journey hopes to restore mana and creates space for preferred identities and new possibilities to emerge.

"The person is not the problem,
the problem is the problem"
- Michael White and David Epston
